Please enjoy the paper and podcast appearance below. The paper is a collaboration between myself, my CERITAS Research Group, Virginia Tech Institute of Creativity, Arts and Technology and Howard University. The podcast appearance on “Human in the Middle AI” touches on many of the topics I laid out in the paper. They couple nicely. Just below are a few excerpts from the appearance. About The Paper:
Amid all the noise around AI, this piece puts a spotlight on the idea of “AI supremacy”, a new way to examine how the capitalist arms race for AI development may be a bigger issue than the tech itself. The paper serves as a statement of Sum’s stance on “artificial intelligence” —a critical reflection emerging from his Spring 2024 collaboration with Virginia Tech and Howard University on AI, digital humanities, and immersive experiences. Supported by insights from leading scholars and artists, the paper presents a POV on the messy crossroads of AI, toxic capitalism, and art, urging us to think critically about the nature of the fights ahead.
About The Writer:
Roshmond “Sum” Patten is an artist, creative director and researcher. Much of his work is focused on the intersection of technology, art, and human liberation. For over two decades, he has helped artists, private companies and institutions benefit from his unique approaches. His work with AI is equal parts highly critical and open-minded. These explorations include training natural language processors and enterprise level discovery algorithms for music and media, …..challenging artificial intelligence’s role in predictive policing, …and advocating for artist-led approaches/resistance to AI development. He co-chairs AI 2030’s Creative Industries Working Group and collaborates with Howard University and Virginia Tech on developing new arts-driven education prototypes. Sum is also the founder of The Kizmet Experience Studio and chief researcher at CERITAS, a research initiative focused on critical media literacy, mindful AI development, expanding consciousness, and the fight against disinformation.
